About

When Sean Sparks was twelve, he and his dad became PADI certified open water and advanced open water scuba divers. While Sean was in his teenage years living at home, Sean had an opportunity to travel to various dive destinations with his family. Living in Texas, Cozumel became a frequently visited dive location. They also traveled to Grand Cayman, Akumal, Turks & Caicos, St. Croix, and the Bahamas.

Sean and his dad both took up underwater photography, Sean with a Nikonos IV and his dad with a Nikonos V. They got involved with the Dallas Underwater Photographic Society (DUPS) for several years.

When Sean was eighteen, he moved out of his parents’ house to attend college at the University of North Texas in Denton. The number of dive trips became fewer and fewer over the years.

Sean got involved in owning and operating a CrossFit gym and a Flotation spa. Scuba diving was put on hold for about fifteen years. Sean’s parents experienced health issues, and Sean’s dad passed after several years of complications that began from a head injury. His mom’s health deteriorated. She passed a year and a half later. It’s one of those times in life when you come to terms with your own mortality.

Sean found his dad’s Nikonos V camera in storage and it sparked memories of the years that they dove together. Sean decided to go through a scuba reactivation course since it had been several years since his last dive. He probably had about 300 logged dives at this point. Sean also took the PADI Nitrox, SDI Solo Diver, and Rescue courses.

The first trip back in the water was Cozumel. Sean took the Nikonos V with him. Unfortunately, the lens flooded on the second dive. He decided to upgrade to an Olympus TG-6 with mini strobes. This was his setup for many years. Currently he shoots with an Olympus TG-7 with a Backscatter video light and snoot.

Sean is in the process of completing his Divemaster Certification. He has dreams of cruising in a sailboat and diving more often.
